Self-Love Chronicles |A Blog

I am The Caribbean Nightingale, Domestic Violence Survivor and living proof that #ArtHeals.

Welcome to SELF-LOVE CHRONICLES. Part memoir and part historical fiction, this blog is written in a short story format. It chronicles my journey as well as other women’s towards healing, self-love, and the celebration of Black Joy amidst periodic life-crushing challenges.

These inspiring stories are infused with Afro-Caribbean culture, cuisine, and storytelling. Discover the transformative power of poetry that has inspired me to proudly take on the title of "The Caribbean Nightingale."

|a baby is born|

The year is 1979. It is mid February. Carnival is in full swing in the lively people-filled streets of Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Mama G's water broke tonight. She is rushed to the town's state hospital next door.

As the rooster starts to crow at dawn, Baby M makes her debut into the wold with a couple of soft cries.

Papa D smiles a big smile and thanks Mama G—with a gentle kiss on the forehead, for gifting him his first daughter.

A few days later, Mama G finally gets to spend some alone time with her newborn daughter in her arms as she hums “Dodo ti titit manman”—a traditional Haitian lullaby.

Mama G then turns on the TV and immediately notices Baby M intensely following the Carnival sounds and colorful silhouettes on the screen—with her little eyes wide open.

The air has finally cooled for the night. So Mama G swaddles Baby M with a light white linen cloth. Mama’s heart is smiling as she whispers in her daughter's left ear, "je t'aime Mica, ma fifille chérie."

Sitting quietly in the corner of the living room, are Baby M's two older brothers. They’re ages 6 and 3. With their backs against the exposed cement blocks, they secretly keep watch over Mama and Baby Sis. They look intrigued by this new addition to their family that seems to be taking everyone’s attention for the past week.
