~ My Why ~
Hello! I'm Michaëlle Martial, a Haitian-born Poet & Spoken Word Artist known as The Caribbean Nightingale. I am a Domestic Violence Survivor who also survived the death of a daughter while caring for a son with a critical illness. Such life altering events have pushed me out of my shell. Although I started writing at the age of 13 in my homeland of Haiti, I didn't write my first poem in English until I took my first Creative Writing course in college shortly after moving to the US. What began as a simple passion and a personal healing tool later became a way for me to foster unity and create community by empowering other women, domestic violence and trauma survivors, as well as other artists from diverse minority groups in Utah, and beyond. Please consider donating to my fundraiser to help me promote mental health through poetry and the arts.

Cooking Experience
Catch the island vibes with me! Having been taught from a young age in Haiti by my mother who was a formally trained chef and in my grandmother’s outdoor kitchen, I view cooking from a very cultural and Afro traditional standpoint. Cooking and sharing food with others is a way to connect with each other. It brings me joy when I see my community sharing laughs around the kitchen table because I helped them experience flavors of the Caribbean through homemade dishes and Afro-conscious Poetry. At the end of the class, we will eat together while I will perform a special poem about the Caribbean where I grew up.
Catering Services
In the spirit of Ubuntu, TASTE THE CULTURE is a partnership between two women, The Caribbean Nightingale, and Yvonne Nsabimana. Our objective is to give a platform to Utah Women Chefs of African descent who may or may not be immigrants to share their passion for cooking and tradition.
