Statement from the Utah Juneteenth Organizers page:
Juneteenth is the oldest celebration marking the end of slavery in the US. The first celebration begin on June 19,
1865, over two years following the Emancipation Proclamation. In Utah, Juneteenth is marked by cultural and
historical presentations and sharing, information and resource sharing, a Town Hall Meeting on the State of Black
Utah, to name a few.
The 29th Annual event theme is Jubilee: Reclaim, Rebuild, Restore and coincides with the 50th Anniversary of several significant Civil Rights events in 1968 including the 50th Anniversary of the King Center for Non-Violent Social Change and the assassination of Dr. King, the Poor People's Campaign, and the Fair Housing Act.
June 19: Juneteenth Recognition Program & World Sickle Cell Day Awareness at Calvary Baptist Church, SLC from 6:30 to
8pm. We are partnering with SL Anti-Discrimination Taskforce.
